Ligament Damage

Posted on March 16, 2012 , by junowebdesign

One of the team at My Wrestling Room is feeling rather sorry for herself this week, due to falling over at the weekend whilst training for her chosen sport. It is incredible that she didn't break her foot, but from the look of all the terrible bruising, she might have. She has reassured us that she visited her medic and all is fine, its just ligament damage.

In all sports, ligament damage is a pretty common injury and in some cases can be more painful and worse than a break. It can knock some people out for around 6 weeks.

How does it happen?

Generally from a fall or a jump, or being pushed over, but what actually causes the damage is the twisting of the ankle and the stretching of the ligaments, they are attached to the ankle and "snap" across the bones, some may hear snapping noises when they go over on their ankle, it's not your bones, it's your ligaments !

How can you prevent ankle injury?

Most of the time it is due to an accident, but one of the most important things you can do is make sure you are wearing the right shoes for your sport.

Running shoes are soft, this is because the foot naturally moves in a rolling motion from the heel to the toe and doesn't need side support. Basketball sneakers have high supportive walls to prevent such things as ankle injuries, plus players tend to move from side to side.

Wrestling shoes have a high ankle support and all over foot support with sticky soles, because you want to anchor yourself to the floor but there maybe pressure on the foot from front to back and side to side.

So, for every sport there will be specific footwear, if you suffer from this kind of injury on a regular basis. You need to strap your ankles up.
