Trading Wrestling Singlets: The New Craze!

I attended this year National Dual Tournament in Maryland this past memorial day weekend. Typically known as the "Maryland Duals" I learned something that is the latest wrestling craze Trading Singlets! Having been around wrestling for more than 30 years, this was new to me.

What is Trading Singlets? Spring Tournaments like the Maryland Duals attract wrestlers from around the country. Many of these wrestlers wear "state" singlets representing their state or region. Some even compete in country singlets representing Ireland, Italy and Germany.

These singlets tend to be "cooler" than those worn during the High School wrestling season and have cool designs. Soring tournaments allow wrestlers to relax just a bit, enjoy wrestling more and this extends to the wrestling gear that they wear. Let's face is no-one is going to remember is you lost a match during a spring tournament. This is the time wrestlers spend improving skills and there is less pressure to win.

My Son Andrew Lenzi , an 8th grade wrestler for The Iowa Style Wrestling club, told me that he saw a bunch of wrestlers trading singlets. A kid from Oklahoma traded his singlet to a kid from Ohio. Another wrestler traded his Florida wrestling singlet with another from Virginia and so on..

Needless to say this is great for wrestling and since combines the natural comraderie and respect among wrestlers with cool wrestling wear - much like basketball sneakers among high school basketball players.

As regional and national offseason tournaments grow, so will trading wreslting singlets.

Coach Mires's Gravatar I agree that with the larger offseason tournaments grow this will be a great pastime for the wrestlers. I will expect that you will see wrestlers bring extra to trade. I really look forward to seeing this trend grow. Great for wrestling in the future.

Team mom's Gravatar It's okay if they are trading a singlet they or their parent have purchased, but not so good when they are trading the team singlets that don't really belong to them. Parents need to think about this and make sure their kids aren't tradign what doesn't belong to them. Our junior league had to replace about 30 singlets this year just so all the kids could have one. That's costly to a club!
